In Australia I visited Sydney, one of the coolest cities I've ever seen, which has a lot going for it: the iconic Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, stylish and relaxed people, hot girls, excellent and diverse food, good shopping, nice parks and beaches, some cool activities, the purple jacaranda trees in bloom when I visited and a generally cool vibe all around. I loved it.

My Sydney and New Zealand trip was also my first time visiting the Southern Hemisphere.

The Harbour Bridge is awesome. You can actually climb on top of it for a very cool experience and fantastic views of the city from above - details here (I mean actually climbing on top of the bridge, not just crossing it). Sydney Opera House is equally impressive - don't miss a show while you're in town. We went to Velvet and had a blast.

The Circular Quay area around the Opera House is very cool with nice restaurants (don't forget to hit a steakhouse!), bars and cafes, and nice views of the harbour. Go on a whale watching tour to see the annual whale migration and you won't regret it: we saw lots of whales, including calves jumping around (I also saw flying fish for the first time, which was a bit surreal). This was my best whale watching experience to date.

Other cool areas in Sydney include Darling Harbour, The Rocks and the downtown area around George Street. Catch a ferry from Circular Quay to Luna Park and enjoy its retro look and feel.

Wildlife Sydney is a nice little zoo focused on local wildlife unique to Australia, that's conveniently located in Darling Harbour. It's a must see for close encounters with koalas, kangaroos, cassowaries and lots more. Next, head to beautiful Bondi Beach for some relaxation, and follow the scenic coastal walk to nearby Bronte Beach for more beach fun.

Sydney's Museums are also worth checking out. The Australian Museum has a Tasmanian Tiger specimen on display (a marsupial native to Australia which sadly went extinct as late as 1936) as well as a great collection of ceremional masks from the Pacific region. Don't miss the impressive St. Mary's Cathedral.
