Moldavia, Romania

Romania's Moldavia region (or Moldova; not to be confused with the independent Republic of Moldova) has the Bucovina region with its beautiful painted monasteries and pretty landscapes. While there are many to visit, don't miss Dragomirna, Sucevita and Putna which were my favorite.

Other cool sites include: the Neamt Citadel, one of the most interesting and well-preserved fortresses in Romania, the Bicaz Canyon, Ciocanesti village and its nicely decorated houses and the little known Miclauseni Castle.

Iasi is the region's most important city and a nice stop while in the area. ZagaZaga is a beautiful resort on the Siret river and a good choice for relaxation on water and on land.
