Portugal

Portugal is a scenic and relaxing country, well suited for vacations. Lisbon is a nice city with marble-paved streets, lots of history and monuments, and good food (check out the pastelarias for nice deserts, the Michelin-starred Restaurant Eleven and the Timeout Market).

Don't miss Avenida da Liberdade, Praca do Comercio, Monumento des Descoberimentos and Parque das Nacoes. A walk around Alfama and to the Sao Jorge Castle is recommended. Another beautiful site nearby Sintra for the colorful Palacio Nacional da Pena, the spectacular Quinta da Regaleira and other nice buildings castles.

Portugal has a lot more to offer so get out of Lisabon and start exploring: the roads are good and the country is small. Porto to the north, the country's second largest city, is delightful. Grab a snack at a cafe along the Douro River and sample the Port Wine (this region is where it comes from). On your way from Lisbon to Porto stop at Fatima, site of the 1919 apparitions of the Virgin Mary and currently hosting an impressive religious complex.

The Algarve region to the south is filled with nice little towns and some of the most spectacular beaches I've ever seen. Lagos is a good place to start exploring with Praia Dona Ana close by - the crown jewel of Agarve beaches.
