Austria (updated)

Austria is a nice and relaxing destination for nature, pretty little towns, culture, history and architecture.

I enjoyed biking along the Danube in the delightful Lower Austria and Wachau Valley areas. My first such trip included the Leiben - Durnstein - Leiben route on the Northern side of the Danube, passing through some delightful villages, and scenic vineyards and orchards (with rented e-bikes from wachaubike.at). The route for the second trip in the area was Tulln an der Donau - Traismauer - Durnstein - Melk (with rented e-bikes from Velopold Vienna). The trips were very scenic (and also presented good oppportunities to spot birds, cute otters and beaver-chomped treees!). Durnstein in particular was very nice with its medieval old town, as was the larger Melk with its splendid Melk Abbey founded in 1089.

Vienna is a nice and clean city with lots of historical points of interest. I enjoyed some of its delightful Christmas markets at Rathausplatz, Belvedere Palace and the Weihnachtsmarkt am Hof. A concert held at the Peterskirche Church was another nice experience. In the town of Linz I visited the Hauptplatz and Winterzauber in Stiegl-Klosterhof Christmas markets. Linz also features Postlingberg hill, reachable by scenic tram ride, which offers nice views of the town and the surrounding area.

Food is good in Austria, with some very tasty pastries, meat products and breakfasts in particular. I also enjoyed the delicious apricot-based brandies, chocolates and sweets in the Wachau area from local producer Bailoni (Bailoni Marillen Cream in particular is very good).
