Beautiful Romania: Bucovina and Maramures
Visited two of Romania’s nicest regions – Bucovina and Maramures. Located in Romania’s North-East, Bucovina is the land of beautiful painted monasteries. Amongst the region’s gems I visited Dragomirna, Sucevita, Putna, Moldovita and Voronet.
Dragomirna and Sucevita were my favorites; in Putna you’ll find the tomb of Romanian XVth Century hero Stephen the Great and the church’s original 1484 bell; Voronet is famous for the intense shade of blue known locally as “Voronet blue”. All monasteries have beautiful gardens and most of them host interesting museums. I also found historic graffiti on some of the walls, dating as far back as the XVIIIth century.
I’ve added some pictures of Bucovina in the updated Moldavia album:
My next destination was Romania’s Maramures region located in the Northern part of the country and home to beautiful wooden churches, well-preserved popular traditions and fabulous green lanscapes. My favorite location was the Barsana monastery.
Other points of interest included the quirky merry cemetery in Sapanta and the sombering memorial to the victims of Communism in Sighetu Marmatiei. While in Bistrita I was lucky to catch a fire acrobatics show which was very cool.

Finally, on my way back I had to revisit the stunning Turda Salt Mine which has to be one of Romania’s coolest attractions by far. More pictures added to the Transylvania album:
